Then, from both sides, conches, drums, and trumpets resounded loudly, and the noise shook the hearts of everyone.

Lesson:

Sanjaya describes the commencement of the battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. He portrays the chaotic atmosphere as both armies prepare for war. The sounds of conches (śaṅkhā), drums (bherya), and trumpets (paṇava) are deafening, echoing across the battlefield. The use of these traditional instruments signifies the beginning of a significant event and serves to motivate and rally the soldiers.

The mention of "gomukhāḥ" or "cows' mouths" refers to the shape of the conches being blown, resembling the mouths of cows. This detail adds to the vivid imagery of the scene, emphasizing the diversity and intensity of the sounds.

The verse conveys the intensity and tension of the moment as the two armies prepare to engage in battle. The loud and reverberating sounds of the instruments create an atmosphere of anticipation and apprehension among the warriors. The noise is so powerful that it not only fills the air but also affects the emotions of those present, causing a palpable sense of foreboding and unease.
