O descendant of Bharata, when the mode of passion predominates over ignorance, the light of goodness prevails; similarly, when ignorance predominates over passion, the mode of goodness becomes covered by darkness.
Lesson:
Lord Krishna explains the interplay between the three modes of material nature - goodness (sattva), passion (rajas), and ignorance (tamas). He describes how these modes influence and interact with each other, affecting an individual's consciousness and behaviour.
Krishna addresses Arjuna as "descendant of Bharata," indicating his lineage and connection to the great dynasty of Bharata. He elucidates that when the mode of passion (rajas) surpasses ignorance (tamas), the quality of goodness (sattva) emerges and prevails. This implies that when one's mind is driven by passion, but not completely clouded by ignorance, they tend to exhibit virtuous qualities such as clarity, wisdom, and righteousness.
Conversely, Krishna explains that when ignorance predominates over passion, the mode of goodness becomes shrouded by darkness. This suggests that when individuals are deeply immersed in ignorance, devoid of passion or clarity, they fail to manifest the virtuous qualities associated with goodness. Instead, they succumb to delusion, confusion, and moral decay.
The verse highlights the dynamic nature of the three gunas (modes) and their constant interplay within the human psyche. It illustrates how the predominance of one mode can influence and shape an individual's thoughts, actions, and character traits. By understanding this interplay, one can gain insight into the complexities of human nature and the factors influencing behavioural patterns.
Krishna's teachings in this verse offer practical wisdom for self-awareness and personal growth. By recognizing the prevailing mode of material nature within oneself, individuals can strive to cultivate qualities associated with goodness while overcoming the detrimental effects of passion and ignorance.
Moreover, this verse emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and spiritual practice in transcending the influence of material modes. By consciously striving to elevate one's consciousness and align with the mode of goodness, individuals can gradually overcome the negative influences of passion and ignorance, leading to inner peace, clarity.
