Krishna defines the characteristics of individuals influenced by demonic tendencies. He lists six negative qualities—pride (dambha), arrogance (darpa), conceit (abhimana), anger (krodha), harshness (parushya), and ignorance (ajnana)—which denote the traits of those with demoniac nature. He addresses Arjuna, explaining that individuals dominated by demonic qualities exhibit arrogance and pride. They harbour a false sense of superiority and entitlement, often looking down upon others with contempt. Such individuals are driven by ego and seek validation through external recognition and power.

Furthermore, Krishna highlights the quality of conceit or self-importance (abhimana) as a characteristic of demoniac nature. Those influenced by this trait inflate their own importance and belittle others, fuelling discord and disharmony in relationships. Their inflated ego blinds them to the inherent dignity and worth of every being.

The verse also identifies anger (krodha) as a hallmark of demoniac nature. Individuals consumed by anger lose control of their emotions and resort to destructive behaviour. Their aggression and hostility create turmoil and suffering, perpetuating a cycle of violence and conflict in society.

Additionally, Krishna mentions harshness (parushya) as a trait of demoniac nature. Those possessed by this quality lack empathy and compassion towards others, often resorting to cruelty and insensitivity in their interactions. Their callousness and indifference contribute to the degradation of moral values and ethical conduct.

Finally, Krishna underscores the role of ignorance (ajnana) in fostering demoniac tendencies. Individuals afflicted by ignorance remain oblivious to the higher truths of existence and the consequences of their actions. Their lack of spiritual insight leads them to engage in selfish and harmful behaviour, perpetuating suffering and delusion.

Through this verse, Krishna alerts Arjuna to the detrimental effects of demoniac qualities on individual character and societal harmony. He emphasizes the importance of cultivating virtuous qualities such as humility, compassion, and wisdom to transcend the influence of demonic tendencies and lead a life of righteousness and peace.
