वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि |

Vāsāṁsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya navāni gṛhṇāti naro'parāṇi.
Tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇānyanyāni saṁyāti navāni dehī ||

As a person discards old clothes for new ones, similarly, the soul discards old bodies to take up new ones.

Lesson:

This verse from the Bhagavad Gita uses the analogy of changing clothes to illustrate the concept of the soul's journey through different bodies. Just as a person changes old and worn-out clothes for fresh ones, the soul leaves behind old and deteriorated bodies to inhabit new ones. The comparison helps us understand the cyclical nature of life and death according to Hindu philosophy.

In essence, the verse teaches us about the eternal nature of the soul and the temporary nature of the physical body. It emphasizes the idea of reincarnation, where the soul undergoes a continuous cycle of birth and death, transitioning from one body to another. This cycle is driven by the soul's karma, or actions, which determine its future embodiments.

Understanding this concept can bring solace in the face of death and loss, as it suggests that life is not limited to a single existence but is part of a broader journey of spiritual evolution. It encourages individuals to focus on their inner growth and actions, knowing that they are not bound by the limitations of the physical body but are eternal beings on a path of self-realization and enlightenment.
