Krishna, you praise both renunciation of actions and the performance of actions. Tell me decisively which of the two is more beneficial.
Lesson:
This verse encapsulates a common dilemma faced by seekers on the spiritual path. Some advocate renunciation as the means to attain liberation, while others emphasize the importance of engaging in selfless action as a way to purify the mind and attain spiritual realization. Arjuna's inquiry reflects the human tendency to seek clarity and certainty in matters of profound importance.
Arjuna seeks guidance from Lord Krishna regarding the superiority between the path of renunciation (sannyasa) and the path of selfless action (karma yoga). Arjuna is perplexed about which path to follow as both seem to be advocated by Krishna at different times. Arjuna addresses Krishna as "Kṛṣhṇa," acknowledging his divine wisdom and seeking clarity on a crucial matter. He observes that Krishna has previously extolled the virtues of renunciation, encouraging him to withdraw from the battlefield and become detached from the consequences of his actions. On the other hand, Krishna has also praised the path of karma yoga, emphasizing the performance of duties without attachment to the results.
Arjuna expresses his confusion by stating, "punar-yogaṁ cha śhansasi," meaning, "you praise both renunciation of actions and the performance of actions." He seeks a definitive answer from Krishna, asking him to specify which path is superior and more beneficial for spiritual growth.

The essence of Krishna's teachings lies in striking a balance between renunciation and action, integrating both paths harmoniously into one's life. While renunciation implies detachment from the fruits of actions, karma yoga emphasizes performing one's duties with dedication and without selfish desires. Krishna will provide guidance to Arjuna, elucidating the merits of each path and ultimately revealing the path that aligns best with Arjuna's temperament and spiritual evolution. Similarly, individuals must discern their own inclinations and capabilities to choose the path that leads them closer to self-realization and inner peace.
