उद्धरेदात्मनाऽऽत्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत्।
आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः || 6.5 ||

Uddharedātmanātmānaṁ nātmānamavasādayet।
Ātmaiva hyātmano bandhurātmaiva ripurātmanaḥ।।

Let a man lift himself by himself; let him not degrade himself; for the self alone is the friend of oneself, and the self alone is the enemy of oneself.

Lesson:

This verse from the Bhagavad Gita teaches us about self-reliance and self-discipline. It says that a person should lift themselves up and not bring themselves down. It emphasizes the importance of self-control and self-improvement.

In simpler terms, the verse is saying that we have the power within ourselves to improve our situation and overcome obstacles. We should not let ourselves be discouraged or degraded by external circumstances or negative thoughts. Instead, we should strive to uplift ourselves and reach our full potential.

The verse also highlights the concept of inner strength and inner conflict. It tells us that our mind can either be our friend or our enemy. When we have control over our thoughts and actions, our mind becomes our friend and helps us achieve our goals. But when we let negative thoughts and desires control us, our mind becomes our enemy and creates obstacles in our path.

Overall, the verse encourages us to take responsibility for our own growth and well-being. By cultivating self-discipline and positive habits, we can become our own best friend and overcome any challenges that come our way.
