Ian Smith was a British politician who served as the Prime Minister of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) from 1964 to 1979. He is most known for his role in declaring Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence from Britain in 1965, which led to international isolation and a protracted guerrilla war. Smith's legacy is deeply controversial, with his policies and leadership remaining a subject of intense debate regarding their impact on Zimbabwe's history and post-colonial development.

"Declaring independence was the most traumatic decision I had to live up to. Because I didn't want to do it."

"I would say colonialism is a wonderful thing. It spread civilization to Africa. Before it they had no written language, no wheel as we know it, no schools, no hospitals, not even normal clothing."

"Freedom. And Justice. If you have those two, it covers everything. You must stick to those principles and have the courage of your convictions."
