Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish priest and theologian who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1540. A former soldier, Loyola experienced a spiritual conversion that led him to dedicate his life to the service of the Catholic Church. His Spiritual Exercises are considered a masterpiece of Christian spirituality, guiding believers in their pursuit of deeper faith and understanding. Loyola's influence extends across education, missionary work, and spiritual formation, making him a central figure in the Catholic Reformation.
