Louis XIV, also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, was the King of France from 1643 until his death in 1715. His reign of 72 years and 110 days is one of the longest of any monarch in European history. Louis XIV is known for his absolute monarchy, his role in strengthening the central government, and for the opulent Palace of Versailles, which became a symbol of his power. His reign marked the height of French cultural and military dominance in Europe, but also left the country with significant debt.
