Maria Jeritza was an Austrian soprano who became one of the most celebrated opera singers of the early 20th century. Renowned for her powerful voice, dramatic stage presence, and striking beauty, Jeritza was a star at the Vienna State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She was particularly famous for her performances in the operas of Richard Strauss and Giacomo Puccini, and for originating the role of Ariadne in Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos." Jeritza's contributions to opera helped to shape the modern operatic repertoire.
