Mathias Rust is a German pilot known for his dramatic and controversial flight into Soviet airspace in 1987. Rust's unauthorized landing near Red Square in Moscow was a significant political event, leading to a major shake-up in Soviet military and political circles. His daring stunt highlighted issues of security and governance during the final years of the Soviet Union.
