Standing Bear, also known as Ma-chu-nah-zah, was a Ponca Native American chief who became a symbol of Native American resilience and resistance against injustice. In the landmark court case Standing Bear v. Crook, Standing Bear successfully argued that Native Americans were "persons within the meaning of the law" and thus entitled to legal rights and protections. His courageous stand for justice and human dignity paved the way for greater recognition of Native American rights and sovereignty.
