Strom Thurmond was a towering figure in American politics, known for his lengthy tenure as a United States Senator from South Carolina. A controversial figure due to his segregationist views early in his career, Thurmond later evolved on racial issues, becoming one of the first Southern senators to hire African American staffers. His political career spanned decades, and he was a staunch advocate for states' rights and conservative principles.
