William Tecumseh Sherman, an American general, played a pivotal role in the Union's victory during the American Civil War. His "March to the Sea" campaign, which brought total war to the Confederate states, hastened the end of the war and cemented Sherman's reputation as one of the most formidable military leaders in US history.
